yardtotable:

The chickens and I finally got around to reading Julie Klausner’s great, funny book, I Don’t Care About Your Band. (She lifted the “bird ban” on her podcast a few weeks ago, so it’s now ok for fans to send in photos of their birds. Here are mine.)

Whenever I look at the chickens on their perch, I think of this line from a piece I read in the NY Times a few years ago, about farm animals during a storm:

In a high wind, the pigs snooze together at the back of their house, straw pulled over their heads. The chickens sit on their perches, knitting and doing their accounts.

OH MY DEAR LORD, these chick-uns are only getting fancier!!

TWO MORE CHICKENS ARE READING MY BOOK!! What begot this trend?!? I swear, when I said “you are now encouraged to send photos of your bird pets,” I expected parakeets. I WAS A FOOL TO.

Here are Phyllis and Purla, a Silkie and a White Crested Polish Chicken, respectively. I can’t believe I just typed that thing under these two images I just saw! Viva Nicole Joanne Georges, who sent these in, and who is a hugely talented illustrator and comic artist as well!

Oh my dear lord.
In what I can only call a complete upset of whatever my expectations were originally, Theresa and Paul Kodama have submitted the first-ever photo of CHICKENS reading my book.
This development comes after last week’s podcast, during which I reversed my “no birds” policy in regards to photos of pets posing with my stuff. Despite detractors who believe, as I do, that birds are dinosaurs, I felt it was fair to give them a chance. I expected—-well, what did I expect? Parrots? Cockatiels? Canaries? A menagerie reminiscent of Heidi Fleiss’s flock? I am not sure. I guess I know that I did not expect chick-unns. But here they be!
Thank you, Theresa & Paul for making pet photo history with this indelible image. And for those of you who are curious, these hot hens are named Gloria, Henny Penny and Pot Pie. Welcome to the family, guys!
